BIOGRAFIE
SAFI is loud. Intense.
A raw, uncomfortable yet magical anomaly. Ambivalence and inner turmoil are the starting point; the combined virtuosity of a four-and-a-half octave vocal range and an art degree are the foundation, never an end in itself. SAFI shows her face with unadorned directness, pure, grand. Embraced by a massive wall of sound. A cacophony.
SAFI’s words, sharp-edged and clear, are fragments of realities hurled into soundscapes. “The moment stuck between your nerves.” Lyrics and the raw defiance of her voice define SAFI’s watchful gaze on things – political, dark, real. Song structures forge new paths and morph into walls of sound from the three-piece band, consisting of two guitars, drums, and electronics. Categories are shattered, and with the current work “Groteske,” they expand beyond post-punk and no-wave into avant-garde. “Uff.” (Alexander Hacke, Einstürzende Neubauten)
SAFI’s voice is SAFI.
The apex of her musical expression. She doesn’t unravel ideologies but offers the audience concentrated material for reflection.
The content is unconditional, demanding, and deeply personal. This allows her to access artistic perspectives beyond the usual peripheries common in this context. “SAFI is a single critical moment that devours the future and feels like open-heart surgery.” (Westzeit Magazin)
When profit orientation destabilizes the global structure, democratic processes are questioned, enemy images replace solutions, and racism further divides our society, it must be the task of art to translate speechlessness, to encourage, to be a mirror, to ignite conscience. “Are you afraid?”, the track “Adrenalin (feat. Rummelsnuff)” spits in the face of the club-wielding crowd and exposes agitation as fear.
SAFI’s third studio album was produced by Berlin sound creator Moses Schneider. (Tocotronic, Ätna, and many more).
“Natural vocal distortion – cool shit!” It’s all about pure energy. The tracks were played, sung, and recorded live in real-time at Hansa Studios Berlin. With a love for noise that carves itself out of conventional sonic attitudes, the potential was captured without cymbals, without standard playing techniques, and without imposed schemes. Instead, it was achieved with the help of prepared instruments and a sheet of metal from the junkyard.
With “Groteske,” SAFI will release on Rookie Records for the first time.
There, she delivers a furious statement on how punk can also be defined.
The album is an uncompromising, abrasive, and thorny signal for a new beginning.
Listeners will once again receive a rugged beast that they’ll only want to enjoy at maximum volume. “I can’t think of any other female musician in Germany who produces such uncompromisingly magical noise.” (Sebastian Madsen)
